In Acts 10:1-8 we see what the scripture would call a "devout man." Cornelius is described as a man who feared God, was generous to the people around him, and prayed continually to God. The Lord shows up to him in a dream and directs him on what he needs to do. We need to be people who fear God, are generous, and pray. As we do this, God will lead and guide us into what he wants us to do. God has a specific plan for us, and it's fantastic that he loves us enough to be so personal. Opening our hearts to hear from God starts with being like Cornelius.
